Rashidi Yenkini Dead
Nigeria's all time record goal-scorer and one time African Footballer of the Year Rashidi Yekini has passed away after two years of mental illness.
It is alleged that he died in a private hospital in Ibadan on May 4th and as his religion demands, he is expected to be buried on May 5th, 2012. He was born in Kaduna.
The confirmation of his tragic death was confirmed Mutiu Adepoju. Mutiu Adepoju was part of the Super Eagles team that clinch the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
He had a record of netting 37 goals in 58 games. Aside playing for his nation, He has played for Africa Sports National in Ivory Coast and Victoria Setubal in Portugal; to name a few.
He was adjourned the best African Footballer of the year in 1993.
There are conflicting stories about where exactly he died. Whiles others say he died at his Residence in Kwara State others claim he died in Osogbo in Osun State with other saying he died in a Private hospital.
Several calls made to one of his coaches, Onigbinde to confirm his state were unsuccessful. Yekini played both local and International matches.
Attempts made via phone to reach one of his coaches Onigninde to confirm the tragic story proved futile.
Meanwhile the Kwara State government has sent a condolence message to the family of the soccer legend.
In their message which was signed by the CPS to the Kwara State Government, Abdul Wahab Oba, stated "Government received with great shock and disbelief the sudden and untimely death of one of the finest and dedicated football players Nigeria has ever produced, Rasheed Yekini.""During his active days, the late Yekini demonstrated uncommon skills on the field of play and commitment to the Nigeria project that he was known not only in Nigeria butacross the African continent as a great footballer''"He will surely be missed at a time when his experience is needed to move Nigeria football to the next level.
